Guided Tactile Descriptions

Water as Grief

Throughout the exhibition a wave like pattern of slow sloping black solid and dotted lines travel along the white walls and across the ceiling. This tactile replica is a scaled down version of the patterns on the walls. Notice how some of the lines are solid while others are made of tiny dashes.

There is no order to grief. It is often complicated, deeply painful, and very confusing.

Shock & Denial: We think “how is this happening?” Grief pushes us into cold, numbing water.

Pain & Guilt: Everything hurts. We are in harsh waters.

Anger & Bargaining: Turbulent waves swell around us and in us.

Depression, Reflection & Loneliness: We sink into deeper waters. Where did the light go? We turn into ourselves.

Upward Turn: As the turbulence eases, hope returns.

Reconstruction & Working Through: We swim into welcoming waters.

Acceptance: The water is shallow and clearer in these parts. We find our footing. We accept what we went through. We find our way forward.
